Non-Toxic Mattress Buying 101
I have a confession… I am 32 and I JUST bought my first mattress, and I found the best non-toxic mattress! Every other bed I’ve had has come from my parents, and our last one Levi bought before we were married. It was (past) time for me to be a big girl and get a new bed!
I can’t make a big purchase without doing extensive research, almost to a fault. Levi finally said, “just pick a bed and order it”. We were not sleeping well and waking up with a sore back… I’m already having a hard time with the fact that I’m closer to 40 than 21, I’m not ready for an achy back.
Did you know that buying a bed was so involved?! There are so many options! Foam, Spring, Hybrid? Firm, Medium, Plush? Warm or cool? Is it better for side sleepers? stomach sleepers? back sleepers? Luckily we live in the age of Google and YouTube! There are sites specifically dedicated to the complex world of mattress reviews! I spent a lot of time going through all the pros and cons of different mattresses, so I hope you can put my obsessive research to good use.
Organic beds…that’s a thing?
Sure is! I honestly had no idea! But, once I did my research I knew that was the route I wanted to take. There is a known link between the flame retardant used on mattresses and infertility, so for me it was an easy choice. The only downside is that they are more expensive. I found that on average a non-toxic matress was a few hundred dollars more.
We settled on the non-toxic mattress EcoCloud Hybrid, from Wink Beds. We’ve been sleeping on it for about a month and we are super happy with it. I chose this one for several reasons. We are both side/stomach sleepers, and a softer bed is recommended for us. I knew I wanted a hybrid because I liked the idea of the support of the springs but the softness of a foam topper. The EcoCloud has a latex topper which is the natural alternative to memory foam.
I went back and forth between two mattresses and ultimately chose this one because it is made in the USA, with American sourced materials. It is a bed in a box, but because it is all-natural there is no “gassing off period” (why is that an okay thing?!). We set it up in the evening and slept on it that night.
Runner-up Non-Toxic Mattress Options
- Avocado Green Mattress– It’s made of 100% certified organic latex, wool, and organic cotton and it gets great reviews! We didn’t go with this option because it is a firm bed and we knew we wanted something a little plusher. They also make crib beds for your little one! Knowing what I do, our baby (whenever he or she comes) will have a non-toxic mattress.
- Saatva– all of their mattresses have a 100% organic cotton cover, their non-toxic mattress has a wool layer that serves as the flame retardant vs. a chemical retardant. I honestly can’t remember why we didn’t go with this option it seems like a great one!
- Birch– Another great organic option, again we did not pick this one because it is a firmer option than we were looking for. But it has almost 700 reviews and gets 4.5 stars, so I’d say it’s a pretty solid option.
Traditional Beds
I looked at several different beds before I decided to go the organic route, and there are so many great options. The bed-in-a-box world is ever-expanding, you can almost certainly find a bed to fit your preferences. Most brands have a risk free trial period, so you get to sleep on your new mattress for a few months before you commit. The length varies from company to company, but 120 nights was the average. If you decide you don’t like the mattress, the company covers the return, and some brands donate the mattress to shelters! Which I love!
The two sites I used most when researching are myslumberyard.com and sleepopolis.com. These sites cover everything you’ve ever wanted to know about a mattress and more! The people that run these sites put a lot of effort into making sure you have all the information you need to choose your perfect mattress.
My top three choices for non-organic beds were the original Wink Bed, the Helix Midnight Luxe, and the CRaVE mattress, all are worth checking out!
Goldilocks was 100% right, picking a mattress is a very personalized choice! I hope this helps you in your hunt for a new bed or at least gives you some ideas. Happy mattress shopping! Let me know if you have any questions, or if you have tried any other brands that you love!
Thanks for stopping by!
